Below is a sample schedule for a 2 Day Summer session of 2023 Parent & Family Orientation (Slight adjustments may occur but those would not impact start and end times of the overall session). Final schedules will be distributed at orientation check-in. These sessions take place in late May, June, and July (for Summer and/or Fall classes) and are only open to first-year students and their families.

Day 1

8:00 – 9:00 a.m. The University of Alabama Student Center, 2nd floor
Receive your materials, name tag, and information for the day. (New UA students must be registered in advance for Bama Bound.)

Capstone Connections Info Fair

8:00 – 9:15 a.m. Student Center, 2nd floor
Visit with campus partners to learn more about specific opportunities, organizations, and resources that will enhance your student’s college experience.

Welcome to The University of Alabama

9:15 – 10:05 a.m. Student Center Ballroom, 3rd floor
Meet the Orientation Staff and University Leadership who will assist you throughout your orientation experience.

Dismissal of Students

10:10 a.m.

At this time, students are dismissed to attend student-only sessions. Parents and family members will rejoin students for the afternoon’s College Visit and dinner.

Financial Aid at UA *

10:10 – 10:25 a.m. Student Center Ballroom, 3rd floor
Learn from Student Financial Aid representatives about the logistics of financial aid disbursement and more.

Way to Pay at UA *

10:25 – 10:35 a.m. Student Center Ballroom, 3rd floor
Learn from Student Account Services representatives about the process and options for payment at UA.

Supporting Students’ Safety on Campus *

10:35 – 10:55 a.m. Moody Music Hall
University Police will share information about UAPD’s services and programs and provide effective tips for reminding your student to stay safe on campus.

Housing and Residential Communities*

10:55 – 11:25 a.m. Student Center Ballroom, 3rd floor
Housing and Residential Communities will present tips to help you prepare your student to make UA their home away from home.

Orientation Leader (Avanti) Small Group/Lunch *

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Various Locations
Depending on your student’s college, Avanti’s will provide you with an opportunity to get to know one another and learn about student involvement on campus through a small group presentation followed by lunch at the Student Center Food Court OR Avanti’s will guide you to lunch followed by an Avanti Small Group. (Lunch is included in your Parent & Family Orientation fee.)

Transition to UA with FYE and Crucial Conversations *

1:25 – 2:05 p.m. Student Center Ballroom, 3rd floor
Your student has not yet left the nest. A staff member from Parent & Family Programs will help you navigate some of the important family conversations to have in preparation for your student’s transition to UA.

Academic Essentials *

2:05 – 2:25 p.m. Student Center Ballroom, 3rd floor
Students can sometimes struggle to transition from high school academics to college academics. Get some tips on resources that will help support your student’s academic success.

College Visit

2:45 p.m. Various Locations
During this session, you will learn of opportunities within your student’s academic area and begin conversations about your student’s class schedule.

Take Care of Business

After College Visit Various Locations
Visit Financial Aid, Office of Disability Services, Veteran and Military Affairs, etc.

Dinner

5 – 6:30 p.m. Lakeside Dining
Enjoy dinner with your student. If you need food accommodations, a Bama Dining staff member will be available to assist you.

UA views student wellness holistically. Listen and learn from a panel of on-campus wellness professionals about the large numbers of campus resources dedicated to supporting student wellness and ways families can also support student wellness.

Supporting Student Safety on Campus Panel *

Listen and learn from a panel of UA’s safety and emergency preparedness personnel as they discuss resources, services, and programming on personal campus safety.

Direct From UA Students *

This panel session will provide an opportunity to get your lingering questions answered by experienced UA students and Parent & Family Programs.

Bryant Museum Visit*

12:00 p.m. Bryant Museum next to Moody Music Hall
The Division of Student Life invites you to visit for free the Bryant Museum to learn more about UA’s traditions as you wait for your student to finish registering for classes. Some proceeds from the Museum store will be given to the Division of Student Life Capstone Fund, which supports students.
