The Action Card is your student’s official University identification card. It is an essential key to campus life and a handy tool for managing money.

Action Card accounts are similar to a checking account. With a prepaid deposit of funds, students can use their card to make purchases at participating locations. Bama Cash accounts are optional. Money deposited in a Bama Cash account can be used at locations both on and off campus. The National Alumni Association of The University of Alabama is an organization of current students, alumni, former students, and friends of the University whose purpose is to stimulate interest in and mobilize support for the betterment of The University of Alabama. While the Alumni Association has several support programs, the most significant is the Alumni Scholarship Program. Through both competitive and membership-based scholarships the purpose of the Alumni Scholarship Program is to recruit prospective students to the University, recognize full-time undergraduate students for their academic excellence, and attract children and grandchildren of UA graduates who are also members of the Association. Through earnings generated from investment of endowments combined with its operating budget and other available funds, the National Alumni Association is responsible for awarding approximately $4.5 million in scholarship assistance annually to more than 2,400 students. Each candidate for graduation is expected to submit an online degree application through myBama by the set deadline. A student who fails to meet the deadline will be required to apply online for the following graduation. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor to ensure they stay on track in completing degree requirements. A graduation fee is charged each time a student applies to graduate. If a student does not graduate in the term they applied, they will be refunded a portion of the fee. The University of Alabama offers a multitude of exciting cultural events throughout the semester, which include theatrical and dance performances, art lectures and exhibitions, as well as musical performances. The Theatre District (including the Marian Gallaway Theatre and the Allen Bales Theatre in Rowand-Johnson Hall and Morgan Auditorium across the street) is located on Stadium Drive near the intersection of Marr’s Spring Road on the west end of The University of Alabama campus. The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is located in Garland Hall and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with Thursday evening hours of 5 to 8 p.m. Additionally, the School of Music, located in the Frank Moody Music Building, offers student performances as well as guest artists, which frequently features the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra. Students are expected to attend classes as scheduled. Attendance policies will be provided to each student at the beginning of the semester in each class. Methods for making up missed assignments may vary from course to course; however, these methods will be stated in the course syllabus provided to each student at the start of each semester.
The BamaBikes Program is a Student Life initiative designed to provide a low-cost bicycle rental system for UA. The program was developed to help students move around campus in a quick, safe and sustainable fashion. The UA community enjoys 25 convenient on-campus dining locations throughout campus that feature 30 options, making it easy for students, faculty, and staff to enjoy great-tasting meals while at the Capstone. There are a total of six on-campus dining locations that currently accept meal plans: Lakeside Dining Hall, Burke Dining, Fresh Food Company, Bryant Dining, Julia’s Market, and Presidential Terrace. The Dining Dollars program is designed to supplement a student’s campus dining needs. All undergraduate students with nine or more (on-campus) credit hours are required to purchase $325 in Dining Dollars each semester. The story of how the elephant became the mascot for The University of Alabama dates back to 1930. On October 8 of that year, a sportswriter wrote, “At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. An excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,’ and out stamped this Alabama varsity.” Big Al’s debut as UA’s mascot came at the 1979 Sugar Bowl, where the Crimson Tide turned back Penn State at the goal line to earn a 14-7 victory and a national championship. Today, the elephant is synonymous with the Crimson Tide, and Big Al is one of the nation’s most popular collegiate mascots.
The Black Warrior Review is a nationally-recognized literary magazine published by graduate students in the creative writing program. Published biannually in the fall and spring, it features fiction and poetry as well as essays and book reviews. Writing, editing, design, and business experience is available for students. Named in honor of Dr. John L. Blackburn who served as UA’s dean of men and was instrumental in the peaceful integration of campus, the Blackburn Institute develops a network of leaders, the Blackburn Fellows, who have a clear understanding of the challenges that face the state of Alabama. The Blount Undergraduate Initiative is a four-year program that affirms the value of a liberal arts education based on classical traditions. The objective is to instill in students the habits of mind that characterize self-reliant thinkers. The Blount Program is based on the assumption that all students, no matter their backgrounds, can read and discuss excellent literature. The program also invites students to join faculty in the liberal arts tradition of exploring the intellectual and cultural heritage of western civilization and to come to a critical perspective for understanding the world in all its diversity. Bryant-Denny Stadium is the home of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, winners of 16 national championships. The stadium is named for legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and former UA president George H. Denny. The most recent expansion, in 2010, increased stadium capacity to 101,000.
The Student Mail and Package Distribution Center will handle all student mail and packages, departmental mail, and all other mailing options that are available with USPS. Students will be able to rent a mailbox and receive USPS, UPS and FedEx items at this location, which will be on the first level of the Ferguson Center. In addition, computers will be available for students, faculty and staff to go online to ship items by UPS or FedEx. These packages will be accepted at the Campus Mail counter. The Campus Mail center will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays (closed the day of home football games), providing efficient and convenient service for the University community. Class standing is the term used to describe your student’s year classification at The University of Alabama. Students with 0-29 hours of completed college credit are classified as freshmen, 30-59 as sophomores, 60-89 as juniors, and 90 or greater as seniors.
Coleman Coliseum is home to the Crimson Tide men’s basketball and gymnastics teams. The Coliseum seats more than 15,000 and frequently hosts UA events such as commencement exercises.
Convocation is a way for new UA students to officially embark upon their college career at the Capstone. This events serves as the welcome to new students by the University community just before classes begin the for the Fall semester and is designed to inspire new students and give them a sense of what is possible as they begin their endeavors at the Capstone. During this occasion, students are reminded of their commitment to the UA community through the words of the Capstone Creed. The Capstone Creed was developed by the Student Leaders Council as a reflection of the core values that sustain members of the UA community.
The University provides computer labs for use by its faculty, staff, and students. These are maintained by the individual colleges and departments. All computer labs have a standard printing policy and pricing. All use the Uniprint system and charge five cents per page for black and white printing and 15 cents per page for color printing. The Uniprint system requires students to have Bama Cash on their Action Card. The Crimson Ride is The University of Alabama’s transportation system and operates weekdays during the spring and fall from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Summer hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekend and after hours transportation is also available by calling 205-348-RIDE (7443). The Network, which includes more than 60 radio stations, is a service of Crimson Tide Sports Marketing (CTSM). CTSM is a joint venture of Learfield Communications of Jefferson City, Missouri, and International Sports Properties, based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Alabama football is just the beginning of the Network’s coverage of Alabama athletics. Fans will also be able to hear play-by-play of men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, the weekly coaches’ call-in show, daily updates on all sports, as well as weekly television shows highlighting Crimson Tide athletics. The Citadel family of stations in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa will serve as the network’s flagship stations. In Birmingham, the Citadel stations include WZRR-FM 99.5 and WAPI-AM 1070. The new Tuscaloosa affiliate is WFFN-FM 95.3 with backup coverage from WTSK-AM 790.
The Crimson White is the student newspaper of the University. It is published four times per week throughout the academic school year and once per week during the summer. Students of all majors work for the paper. Parents can read the paper online on the Crimson White website.
DegreeWorks allows students to access their personalized degree audit from anywhere at any time. This system allows students to track their degree progress, explore other majors and minors, and develop semester by semester plans to guide them through their time at UA. DegreeWorks also contains eight semester plans for every undergraduate major which are accessible through the Student Educational Planner. A student may access DegreeWorks through myBama. The Office of Disability Services (ODS) serves as the central contact point for students with disabilities. The goal of ODS is to provide a physically and educationally accessible University environment that ensures an individual is viewed on the basis of ability, not disability. ODS works individually with students to determine appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations and to ensure that students’ academic performance is evaluated apart from the limiting effects of disability. A student may withdraw from, or drop, an individual course until the end of the tenth week of a fall or spring semester, the second week of Interim session, the third week of a five-week summer session, or the fourth week of a 10-week session. After this period, students are expected to maintain their course loads. Students should contact their academic advisor for more information on the policies involved in dropping classes. The University of Alabama’s English Language Institute (ELI) provides instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) and orientation in U.S. culture to international students who are non-native speakers of English. The ELI’s goals include: providing international students with the cultural knowledge and awareness which they will need to function satisfactorily, both academically and socially, in the U.S.; preparing students who are studying ESL for academic purposes with academic skills and strategies that will help them to be successful in their undergraduate or graduate studies; serving as a resource for international education to the faculty, staff, and students of The University of Alabama; and, encouraging all students, as citizens of the world, to learn to respect and appreciate countries and cultures different from their own. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended, is a federal law that protects the privacy and confidentiality of personally identifiable information contained within student education records. Freshman Seminars seek to engage first-year students in meaningful relationships with their peers, faculty, and/or the campus community. Freshman Seminars feature special topics that often take an interdisciplinary approach to subject material. The purpose of the Freshman Seminar is to emphasize the development of intellectual abilities in a small classroom setting. The seminars provide a mechanism for new students to get to know faculty and for faculty to share their excitement and enthusiasm in studying a favorite topic. Built in 1829, the Gorgas House was the first structure to be built on The University of Alabama campus and stands as an excellent example of Low Country architecture. The Gorgas House is one of only four buildings on campus to survive the Civil War and the only one designed by renowned architect William Nichols. Originally built as a “hotel” or “steward’s hall,” the house served as a dining hall for the University students until the mid-19th century when it became a faculty residence. The Gorgas family lived there from 1879 to 1953. The residence is now a house museum with collections of antiques and Gorgas family memorabilia. For more information, visit the Gorgas House website.
In undergraduate courses at The University of Alabama, passing grades are A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, and D-. The F and I (Incomplete) grades cannot be modified with a + or -. Four grade points are given for each hour of A; three for each hour of B; two for each hour of C; and one for each hour of D. The plus sign added to a grade raises the points awarded by one-third point per hour. A minus sign lowers the points awarded by one-third point. For more information, view the undergraduate catalog.
The GUARDIAN program allows students to use their cell phones to notify UAPD at the touch of a single button if they need emergency assistance or to set a passive timer based on their expected arrival time at a destination on campus or in the Tuscaloosa area. If a student initiates an emergency call or if the notification timer is not deactivated, GUARDIAN software provides UAPD with critical profile information and, in most cases, GPS information to help contact and locate the student if necessary. If the student deactivated the notification time when he/she reached the destination, no information is forwarded to UAPD. To sign-up for the GUARDIAN programs, students should go to their myBama and select the GUARDIAN link. There is no charge to sign up for or use the program.
Residents who encounter a problem with their room, such as heat, air conditioning, locks, etc., should enter a work order through the Housing and Residential Communities website. For emergencies that occur after 3:30 p.m. or on weekends, students should contact their area desk.
The University of Alabama’s IT Service Desk is available 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for any technological questions students may have about email, Internet access, computer labs, computer security, and much more. Coin or Bama Cash operated laundry rooms are located in all of the residence halls. LaundryView is an Internet application that allows you to monitor the status of washers and dryers in connected laundry rooms through a Web browser. LaundryView was developed in response to requests for greater control over laundry activities. Since many people tend to do their laundry during similar time periods, it results in busy laundry rooms. LaundryView’s mission is to help students save time by providing information about the current state of laundry room equipment wherever students have access to a browser or email messages. University Libraries at The University of Alabama includes five libraries: Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library (located on the Quad), Angelo Bruno Business Library (Stadium Drive), McLure Education Library (University Boulevard), Eric and Sarah Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering (Hackberry Lane), and the W. S. Hoole Special Collections Library (on the second floor of Mary Harmon Bryant Hall on Hackberry Lane). The Sanford Media Center, located on the second floor of Gorgas Library, is a multimedia production facility for students. The University Libraries offer services such as interlibrary loan, library instruction, circulation, course reserves, and reference and information services, plus the library electronically links researchers 24/7 to a wide array of databases, electronic journals, and course guides. Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) connect students’ academic interests with their residence hall and allow them to live in UA’s residence halls for the same cost, while accessing educational opportunities exclusive to each LLC. Each community is unique, with specific requirements and living arrangements. Some LLCs require a separate application from the housing application, while others can be selected during the online room selection process. The Honors College and the Blount Undergraduate Initiative, in particular, require a separate program application. Marr’s Field Journal is an undergraduate literary/art journal produced by students showcasing student creative compositions. Marr’s Field Journal recently received a National Pacemaker, and award honoring general excellence in collegiate magazines, marking it as one of the three best publications of its type in the country as determined by the National Collegiate Press Association.
The University of Alabama’s “Million Dollar Band” is an exciting and important part of the spirit and tradition of the University community and Crimson Tide athletics. Comprised of more than 380 students with various majors and interests, the band is the largest single organization on campus. Participation in the marching band enables members to continue their involvement in a quality band program while interacting and traveling with a large cross-section of students. The nationally recognized “Million Dollar Band” was honored with the Sudler Trophy in 2003, an award that recognizes collegiate marching band programs with long-term excellence in the marching band activity. The band’s percussion section has been featured in advertisements internationally and has partnered with Evans Drumheads, Innovative Percussion, Pearl Drums, and Zildjian Cymbals. Alta Marea, the band’s winterguard, has competed in World Guard International, making the championships in its first three years of existence. Membership in Alta Marea is open only to members of the marching band.
The University of Alabama Transportation Services Department offers the Motorist Assistance Program (MAP) to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. If students happen to accidentally run out of gas, need a battery jump, or even need air in their tires, M.A.P. is there for students, free of charge. myBama is an interactive website for University of Alabama students, faculty, and staff. myBama provides access to email, personal calendars, course information, campus news, and more, all the time, from anywhere in the world. A student may allow a parent or other individual to view his or her financial student account and to conduct business (i.e., make a payment, elect deferment plan option, confirm class schedules) on the student’s behalf. The student will assign a user ID and password, through his/her myBama account, to allow this access and will need to give this information to the individual(s) authorized by the student. Your student will need to go to myBama, click on the Student tab, and under Banner Self-Services, Student Services, click on the Student Receivables channel. Choose Create/Change a Parent Guest Account and complete the information. If you provide email address(es) in conjunction with the Parent/Guest Account, these email addresses will also receive notices and reminders of billing dates and deadlines. The National Student Exchange (NSE) is an undergraduate study away program much like study abroad. Rather than crossing oceans, NSE students cross state, regional, provincial, and culture boarders. Through this program students take a semester or academic year to attend another fully accredited participating institution while making progress toward University of Alabama degree. By participating in the program, students can broaden their personal and educational experiences, explore and appreciate new cultures, take courses not offered at The University of Alabama, learn from different professors, explore new areas of study, break out of their comfort zones, expand academic program options, experience personal growth, and investigate graduate schools or employment opportunities. Student housing options abound in the Tuscaloosa and surrounding community. Students’ transitions to off-campus living are encouraged and supported through Housing and Residential Communities’ off-campus resources, which include an off-campus housing web site, housing fairs, and programming in the residence halls about leases, landlords, and successful community living. The Office of Student Conduct seeks to develop students in a manner that provides a foundation for success, a commitment to responsible citizenship, and a desire to make positive lifestyle choices based on the Capstone Creed values of fairness, honesty, accountability, integrity, and respect. If a student is charged with violating the Code of Student Conduct, parents will typically be notified if the charges are associated with the University’s alcohol or drug policy. You can help guide your student through the process and be supportive while holding your student accountable to your expectations and the University’s. You can also help identify and provide necessary interventions, such as alcohol or drug evaluations, anger management, and others, so that your student can be successful at Alabama. Student online registration for a parking permit begins at the end of June and coincides with the registration window for classes. Emails are sent to the student’s crimson email prior to registration letting them know when they are to register. Freshmen can register for a parking permit the day after registering for classes as long as the parking permit registration is opened. Priority is given to upperclassmen for the commuter zones. Residential students are guaranteed a parking permit for their residential zone whenever they register. The RA is a well-trained student staff member who is prepared to assist students’ transition to campus life and help them connect to the larger University. Students who encounter issues with their rooms or roommates, or who want to learn more about campus life, should first go to their RA.
The term “Alabama resident” for tuition purposes may differ from other definitions of Alabama residency. To be classified as a resident for tuition purposes, a student must meet the guidelines for residency as defined by the Alabama Code and University of Alabama Board of Trustees rule. The UA Safe Zone program provides a visible network of Allies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer and ally (LGBTQA) individuals. Safe Zone Allies distribute information regarding sexuality, gender identity, campus and community resources, and methods for reporting harassment and/or discrimination. The purpose of the Safe Zone program is to produce an environment based on dignity and respect in which every student and employee is free to thrive academically, professionally, and personally. This tool allows students to build the optimal class schedule based on course preferences and breaks that the students create. These breaks can consist of work, practice and other activities during which students are unable to take classes. Schedule Builder is used to generate the class schedule that fits your student’s schedule.
Students are expected to maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher on all work at The University of Alabama. When a student’s grade point average falls below 2.0, the student may be placed on academic warning or suspension. In order to monitor students’ progress toward the baccalaureate degree, The University of Alabama employs the Scholastic Progress Standard (SPS). The SPS sets the minimum required grade point average (for all hours completed at The University of Alabama) for freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior students. The SOURCE provides support to the hundreds of student organizations on campus. The SOURCE can aid student organizations in their efforts to recruit members by providing consulting and publicity opportunities. The SOURCE also recognizes the accomplishments of organizations throughout the year. Additionally, The SOURCE sponsors “Get On Board Day” each fall and spring, an event designed to encourage student co-curricular involvement by showcasing all student organizations on campus. The Southern Historian is a journal dedicated to publishing research by graduate students concerning the history of the southern region of the U.S. Published annually in the spring, it features research articles, book reviews, and an interview with a prominent historian. The Student Account Services office is responsible for maintaining the student financial accounts, and the Web billing and collection of these accounts. Web payment on myBama at mybama.ua.edu may be made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, DiscoverNetwork, or American Express) or by Web check. If you or your student do not want to make a payment or confirm a class schedule on the Web, the student may mail the required payment to The University of Alabama, Student Account Services, Box 870120, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0120; make in-person payments at Student Account Services, 105 Student Services Center; or pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, DiscoverNetwork, or American Express) via phone by calling 205-348-4470 or 205-348-5350. The primary objectives of the Student Alumni Association (SAA) are to serve as a support group for the National Alumni Association and to provide students, faculty, administrators, and alumni with programs and projects that are beneficial to the University and community. SAA seeks to increase student awareness of the National Alumni Association and to foster interaction between students and alumni. The people who comprise the SAA have been chosen for their academic and leadership qualities. This organization is responsible for numerous fundraisers and projects that have been beneficial to both The University of Alabama and the surrounding community. Admission to baseball and softball, men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics, and volleyball sporting events is free for students with their Action Card. In order to purchase football tickets/attend games, your student must be currently enrolled in classes at UA. If your student is currently enrolled with four or less hours, he or she must purchase an activity/recreation/athletic privilege to be able to buy football tickets. To purchase student football tickets, students can create a student account online on the UA Athletics website or call the Ticket Office at 205-348-BAMA or 877-TIDE-TIX (8433-849).
The Student Care & Well-Being Office is designed to assist students experiencing a crisis situation. Sometimes a student enters college with a serious illness, such as cancer, and will miss class due to the treatment requirements. This office will inform his/her instructors of these absences. If a student is transported to the hospital by emergency medical professionals, the Student Care & Well-Being Office can assist these students with instructor notifications and connect them with various on and off campus resources. These notifications are not to be considered an official excuse. This office can provide assistance with the following: serious injuries or illnesses needing medical attention, alcohol and drug abuse and suicidal or alarming behaviors. Many students over the age of 18 may not be covered by their parents’ policy away from home. Also, those covered by HMOs or PPOs may not have coverage for non-emergency related services when at school and outside the plan’s coverage area. Undergraduate students registered for six or more credit hours and all graduate students registered for at least three credit hours are eligible to enroll in The University of Alabama’s Student Health Plan, administered by UnitedHealthcare StudentResources. Students must actively attend regularly scheduled classes for at least the first 31 days after the date the coverage is purchased. The University of Alabama’s Supply Store (The SUPe Store) is the place for official University of Alabama textbooks, apparel, and gifts. The SUPe Store is owned and operated by The University of Alabama and helps support UA students through book and supplies scholarships, book loans, and academic scholarships. The Office of Veterans and Military Affairs provides programs and services to meet the needs of veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors in order to ease their transition to college life and fulfill their educational goals. The center supports all UA veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors. Programs and services include but are not limited to VA certification, benefits counseling, transition counseling, outreach, family assistance, liaison services (between students and VA), admission assistance, military records assistance, scholarship and financial aid information, tutoring services, counseling services, and the Campus Veterans Association. A student may withdraw from a semester through the last day of classes (excluding final exam periods) in the fall, spring and summer semesters following clearance by the Office of the University Registrar. A withdrawal from the semester occurs during summer term only of the student withdraws from all part of the term. A semester withdrawal will not be processed if the student is enrolled in a part of term that has concluded. No notation of courses attempted is made on the permanent record of a student who withdrawals from the semester during the change of schedule period (when a course can still be added). After the change of schedule period, a grade of “W” (“withdrawn”) is assigned for all courses in which the student was enrolled. The withdrawal process is initiated online through the student’s myBama account.

The University of Alabama’s Writing Center seeks to provide professional writing tutoring to all UA students, graduate and undergraduate. Assistance can be offered in both general writing skills and more discipline-specific forms of writing at any stage of the writing process. The Writing Center also maintains a collection of writing sources in print and electronic form for student use and can help review the requirements of writing assignments, focus ideas and develop strong arguments, write with sources and format work, write in subject areas outside of English and the humanities, and address problems with punctuation, grammar, and spelling. WVUA is the UA student radio station. Operated by a student staff, it plays a regular offering of alternative rock in addition to metal, rap, and other musical styles.
